Start with a piece of paper, and write your name at the bottom. Stemming up from yourself, write your parents names. Then with each of your parents, stem upwards, detailing their parents. Do the same with each parent until you run out of information.

As a general rule, try to keep the male to the left and the female to the right in all relationships. This makes it easier to identify the maternal and paternal lines.

With multiple siblings, i.e. where there is more than one child in a relationship, list them left to right in order of age, if known.

Try to include birth, marriage and death dates for each individual if you know them.
