Start with your parents and move on to your grandparents and great-grandparents.
Ask your aunts & uncles & cousins on both sides.
Chances are, someone has already done the work for you.
Post what you know here, and maybe someone, who has a membership to a genealogical site, can help you with a few lines of ascent, to point you in the right direction.
ancestry.com has a free 14 day guest offer and rootsweb.com is free.
Go to Ancestry.com to do some research…also, there is a link through there for the LDS church…they’ve been cataloguing births and deaths from hundreds of years ago.
I started by making a tree on Geni.com so I could keep my info. straight. They have a few people on there, so you might find someone who is connected to your family tree.
FamilySearch.org is a great place to start. Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com get rave reviews usually, but they require a subscription. MyHeritage.com is FANTASTIC!!! Registration is free, and it searches through a couple thousand databases.
Most, if not all, of these sites will have links to other genealogy sites you can sift through. I’ve also gotten lucky a couple of times just websearching "<so-and-so> family tree"–sometimes you’ll find that someone else has already done the research!!
I’m still a newbie at this (one month in), and I already have two lines that go back to the 1500s and one that goes back to approx. 1100!! I’d love to help you if you need it–just send me an e-mail! marykay.lady@yahoo.com
