Ancestry.com allows month to month payment, I’ve been doing that for about 6 months.

Ancestry.com allows month to month payments but in the US we are able to go to our public library and use the library version for free you may be able to do the same thing.

FamilySearch.org would still be a good free resource for you because they have data on countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Also, Cyndi’s List has an entire page of resources for Australia @ http://www.cyndislist.com/austnz.htm.

Then their are the Australian family history and genealogy
Selected websites @ http://www.nla.gov.au/oz/genelist.html which would seem like the place to look for vital records and help with indeginious family history.

ancestry.com or any of the others have per month, per quarter, or per year arrangements.

ancestry.com here in the States offers free trials of various types as well as being available in many libraries or Mormon Family Sites.
