I used to think that genealogy was boring. But that was before I’d done anything with it yet. Now that it has become addicting to me…. I hear others who have the same complaints that I had (before I got into it). so, I wantedt to take a name from my pedigree sheet and try to bring it to life. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the largest genealogical library in the world. This is evidence of the importance the Church puts on genealogical work (now more commonly referred to as Family History). The reason for such interest in ancestors comes from doctrines of the Church. Mormonism teaches that after death, a person’s spirit still has the opportunity to learn about the gospel, and accept Jesus Christ as his Redeemer. But in order for him to become a member of Christ’s Church, he must be baptized and have other saving ordinances performed in his behalf. This is the job of those who are still living. In temples, members are baptized, or have other ordinances done, on behalf of those who have passed away (such work is said to be done “by proxy”). This gives that person, if he chooses to accept it, the opportunity to become a member of the Church. Every person who has ever lived has a right to make such an important choice. Members of the Church are strongly encouraged to only perform ordinances for people from their own family lines, and to obtain permission from surviving descendants of the recently deceased. My Grandpa is from Iran. How would I go about doing research for ancestors in Iran? I am unaware of how the name system works in Iran. Is it more difficult than doing it on Europeans? How does their vital record system work? How far back did they keep records? How far, if you have done it, have you gone back?

www.youtube.com is a video describing how to learn more about the Mormon Church. This is from the October 2007 World Report 600 people from 17 countries met in Salt Lake City for the 27th annual Conference of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. “With the closeness of the Family History Library, and their thousands and thousands of rolls of film on Jewish records from Europe, we thought that this is a venue where people would come to lectures, but would spend a lot of time at the library.” –Michael Brenner, Vice President The Family History Library and the Association began planning more than 2 years ago to find resources that would best serve conference attendees.
